Do we like Spotify, or do we all boycott it until the main multi-billionaire shareholders share some of their lovely billions with artists??
As compelling a watch as it was, The Playlist on Netflix didn’t make it clear exactly why the founder thought all “culture” should be shared, at very little financial gain for the artists. A fact that’s been playing on our mind for weeks.
Their original remit was to: “unlock the potential of human creativity by giving a million creative artists the opportunity to live off their art and billions of fans the opportunity to enjoy and be inspired by it.”
Yet, of over 8M total artists on Spotify only 2% of users make more than $1k per year, with just the top 1% of Spotify artists making any real revenue from the platform. Adele, Coldplay, Ed, Drake, Taylor etc.
Record labels do pretty well: Sony, Warner Music Group, and Universal have a combined 18% stake in Spotify, making money through that on top of their artists’ streams. For the artists, to get paid the subsequent demise in physical CD/other sales meant that tour prices escalated. This then damaged smaller venues and not all fans can afford ÂŁ100-400 entry tags.
We just miss buying 45″ from Woolworths!!
But many of us use Spotify, so we’ve made you

Some artists simply need to be aired, streamed and will trigger people to dig deep, play more.
Here are some tips to help fill artists’ pockets:
-Streams don’t count if the volume is muted, so keep the volume on
-The song must play for at least 30 seconds to count
-“Follow” the artist
-“Heart” the album and each individual song
-Download albums and songs to your Spotify library
