American in heritage, the first successful Father’s Day was celebrated in 1910 when sons and daughters in Washington wore a rose to church to pay tribute to their living or deceased fathers.
In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson publicly acknowledged the third Sunday of June as being Father’s Day. Six years later, President Richard Nixon declared the date an official national holiday, proclaiming it an “occasion for renewal of the love and gratitude we bear to our fathers.”
Most countries have a Father’s Day, spread across various dates of the year. Britain joins the majority, including the USA, on the 3rd Sunday of June. (Next on June 18th!).
